A large part of Hawaii's economy is driven by spending from the federal government, in particular the Department of Defense. This chart tracks publicly announced DOD contracts for work done in Hawaii as well as by Hawaii-based companies. In cases where only a portion of the work is performed in Hawaii, that percentage is prorated; In the case of Hawaii companies performing work outside the state, a Hawaii impact of 1 percent of the contract total is allocated.
